Phillip Van Saun is director of risk, security and resilience for the University of California Risk Services. Previously he served for nine years as the director of continuity and emergency services at UCSD, where he was a member of the campus Executive Policy Group and co-chaired the campus Behavioral Threat Assessment and Management Team. He is a graduate and former instructor of the national interagency crisis communications program and the White House Military Office’s executive support program. He has served in the field of crisis and risk management since 1987 when he was a Marine assigned to the White House emergency response mission as a member of Marine One – the Presidential Helicopter Squadron. Following military service he served as a consultant to the White House Military Office providing emergency response training to White House support personnel. In 1990 Phillip was awarded the Presidential Service Award for service in the White House. He is the author of Failure Is An Option: A Primer and Guide For Managing Crises.
